Friday, January 30, 2015

SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt.

Students and faculty from the Center for Legal Innovation (CLI) at Vermont Law School will attend LegalTech New York Feb. 3-5, marking the fifth year that VLS represents at the largest annual legal technology event in the country.

Each year, LegalTech draws tens of thousands of legal professionals seeking the latest information in a multibillion industry to improve the practice of law in a changing technological world. Leaders from Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter are slated to speak during the LegalTech 2015 keynote, titled "Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection Legal Challenges in the Digital Age."

VLS Professor Oliver Goodenough, director of the Center for Legal Innovation and visiting scholar at CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Infomatics, will participate in a LegalTech panel titled "Towards the Technology-Driven Future of the Law." And Professor Jeannette Eicks, managing director of CLI, will moderate a panel titled "A New Generation of Legal Tech Applications," which will spotlight new and potentially disruptive applications for the legal service marketplace. Both panels will be held Thursday, Feb. 5.

"The way we practice law is forever changing," Goodenough said. "Vermont Law School is committed to ensuring that our students become leaders in the new reality of the law. At LegalTech, we will explore the future of law and the systematic disruption that legal professionals will inevitably experience as new technologies emerge."

Goodenough and Eicks will be joined by about 15 VLS students.

"The LegalTech experience is invaluable to our students and yields support for research projects in our Center for Legal Innovation, with Google and LexisNexis, as well as jobs for our alumni, including with technology giants like Capital Novus and Exari," Eicks said. "It's an exciting time for the law, and LegalTech is the ultimate showcase for innovation."

The Center for Legal Innovation at Vermont Law School is dedicated to helping create a future where innovation and entrepreneurial energy redefine legal education, the practice of law, and law itself. CLI provides both a scholarly and practical environment for an exploration of what law is and a platform to influence what law will be, including a new summer Hacktivist program open to technology-proficient undergraduates and law students interested in technology.
