Zach Chen ’14 has received the Law Student Ethics Award from the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) New England Chapter, and Nicholas Low ’14 has received the Outstanding Student Award from the Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA).
VLS faculty and clinic attorneys nominated Chen, who worked primarily on asylum and juvenile cases while at the SRLC, for his diligence, compassion, insightfulness, and attention to ethical sensitivities. Low was nominated for his attention to detail and thoughtful manner in working on immigration, juvenile, and bankruptcy cases—all of which led to significant relief for SRLC clients. Both Chen and Low graduated last month.
“As student clinicians, Zach and Nicholas approached cases with great care and professionalism,” said Professor Margaret Barry, SRLC attorney and associate dean for clinical and experiential programs at Vermont Law School, ranked No. 18 in the nation for clinical training. “We are proud of their accomplishments and of the positive outcomes they helped achieve for our clients.”
The South Royalton Legal Clinic serves residents from several Vermont counties who are unable to afford counsel and who need assistance with issues such as children’s rights, family law, housing, welfare and unemployment, health care, Social Security, consumer protection, bankruptcy, contracts, wills, and statutory civil rights, and provides services statewide for those in need of immigration services. Each year, more than 40 Vermont Law School student clinicians and work-study students at the clinic help to represent clients in 250 court and administrative hearings.
