Racial Subordination in Latin America Discussion

7:00pm - 7:00pm

BALE House

The discussion will take a critical look at customary laws in various Latin American countries that perpetuate racial subordination of it's African descendant population and compare similar issues in the U.S. and whether social remedies used here can aide those in Latin America. To set the context of this discussion, we ask that you view the highly-acclaimed film Black in Latin America with Henry Louis Gate, Jr. and/or read Racial Subordination in Latin America: The Role of the State, Customary Law, and the New Civil Rights Response by Tanya Kateri Hernandez prior to attending the discussion. The film is available on DVD and on various video-streaming services (check the library).
