Hot Topic: The Arctic: Shrinking Ice, Emerging Implications for National Security

8:00pm - 8:00pm

Oakes Hall - Room 012

Oakes 012

With Thomas Leary, Deputy Legal Counsel, Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Pentagon

Changes in global climate are resulting in faster-than-anticipated diminishment of Arctic ice, which has facilitated increases in human access to, and activity in, this strategically significant region. The United States has set forth a National Security Strategy for the Arctic Region that seeks to advance our security interests, pursue responsible stewardship in the region, and strengthen international cooperation. Commander Leary will discuss the legal aspects and challenges associated with these efforts, focusing on those especially relevant to the United States military.
