Frederick Lumpkin

Biography

Professor Frederick Lumpkin hails from Yuma, Arizona, though he was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. He graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University in 2005 with degrees in Accounting and Marketing. He attended the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law (USC), where he served as president of the USC Sports Law Society and copy editor for the Southern California Review of Law and Social Justice. During the summer of 2009 he externed at the Arizona Court of Appeals and in August 2010 he was commission a Second Lieutenant in the United States the Marine Corps. He earned his Juris Doctorate from USC in May 2011.

After graduating from U.S. Marine Corps’ Basic School as a member of the Commanding General’s Honor Roll in 2013, Professor Lumpkin assumed his first duty assignment at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, where he served as a Legal Assistance Attorney and Liaison to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) until October 2014. The next month he completed the Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor Course, earning the designation of First Degree Black Belt Instructor. That same month, he joined the Defense Service Organization where, as Defense Counsel, he represented Marines facing judicial and administrative processing. In January 2016, while still serving as Defense Counsel, Professor Lumpkin assumed the role of Officer-in-Charge of Legal Assistance and resumed his role as Liaison to USCIS. From there, he reported as Victims’ Legal Counsel to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in August 2016. Next, he was selected to teach at the Naval Justice School’s (NJS) detachment at Naval Base San Diego, where he taught for a year before returning to MCAS Miramar in August 2018 to serve as Trial Counsel (prosecutor). While still in that role, Professor Lumpkin attended the Expeditionary Warfare School’s (EWS) Blended Seminar at Camp Pendleton, graduating in June 2019. Two months later, he reported to The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Professor Lumpkin graduated in May 2020 with a Masters of Law, concentrating in Criminal Law. In June 2020, Professor Lumpkin executed orders to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms, California, to serve as Senior Trial Counsel, roughly the equivalent to a district attorney. He promoted to his current rank of Major in August 2020 and has twice served as Officer-inCharge of Legal Services Support Team Twentynine Palms. In January 2023, Professor Lumpkin assumed the role of installation Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for MCAGCC Twentynine Palms. He served in that role until executing orders to Yuma, Arizona, to serve in his current role as Staff Judge Advocate for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

Professor Lumpkin has twice earned the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and in 2014, he earned the Distinguished Service Award by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel. He is admitted to the state bars of California and New York.

Professor Lumpkin is an avid sports fan who enjoys watching, training, and competing in a variety of sports—especially football and mixed martial arts. Professor Lumpkin has served as an assistant football and wrestling coach at high schools in California and South Carolina. He is an avid photographer, ice cream connoisseur, and enjoys sketching and graphic design.
