Semester

2016 Spring

About This Class

This course simulates the experience of preparing for trial under the supervision of experienced
trial lawyers. Students will prepare and perform the trial problem issued each November by the
prestigious Texas Young Lawyers’ Association National Trial Competition (TYLA). This
process will involve intensive review of the Federal Rules of Evidence and applicable trial
practice concepts, as well as significant factual analysis, focus, preparation and practice on one
detailed case in order to best replicate the experience of a real trial. Four students are selected
from the class to travel and compete in the TYLA New England Regional Trial Competition.
Method of evaluation:
Evaluation is based on preparation, in-class performance, the incorporation of material discussed
in classes and preparation sessions, improvement during the course, and the trial notebook. It
includes students’ evaluation of the trial case, research, understanding, and responding to
evidentiary issues, and mastering how to admit and object to evidence. Evaluation includes
student performance of trial tasks focusing on the substance of student’s openings, closings,
witness direct and cross-examinations, and objections.
