Vermont Law School Seeks Applicants for 2015 Summer Media Fellowships

Monday, January 26, 2015

SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt.

Vermont Law School, the nation's premier environmental law school, seeks applications from qualified environmental journalists for its 2015 Summer Media Fellowships. As Media Fellows, selected journalists participate in VLS's Summer Session, during which internationally-recognized scholars and leaders in environmental law and policy gather to share their expertise.

Fellowships are open to full-time journalists who cover issues related to the environment, from climate change to public health concerns. Fellows audit one two-week Summer Session course and have access to Vermont Law School's distinguished faculty and visiting policy leaders. Fellows receive a stipend, free housing, free books and a tuition waiver.

The 2015 Summer Session features courses in a variety of categories, including ethics and environmental justice, food and agriculture, pollution, and energy. For a full schedule of 2015 Summer Session courses, visit www.vermontlaw.edu/summer. In addition to attending class, Media Fellows present on a topic of their choice as part of Summer Session's "Hot Topics" series, which covers a wide range of current environmental issues.

Former VLS Media Fellows include Osha Gray Davidson, a freelance writer who has been published in Earthzine, Rolling Stone and The New York Times; Richard Harris of National Public Radio; Beth Daley of The Boston Globe; Tom Henry of The Toledo Blade; and Kevin Begos of The Associated Press.

"The Summer Media Fellowships program provides journalists with a unique opportunity to connect with law and policy experts," said Professor Melissa Scanlan, director of the Environmental Law Center. "These connections provide sources for stories on the critical environmental issues of the day and often evolve into years-long professional relationships. As we like to say, VLS Media Fellows are encouraged to 'think like a lawyer, report like a journalist.'"

The Vermont Law School Summer Media Fellowships program has been made possible since 2002 by a generous grant from the Johnson Family Foundation. Fellows are selected based on work history and samples, commitment to covering environmental law, and their potential for increasing understanding of environmental law and policy issues nationwide. The application deadline for 2015 is Monday, March 2. For more information and to apply, visit www.vermontlaw.edu/summer/media-fellowships, call 802-831-1228, or email mapelquist@vermontlaw.edu.
