Students Bring Street Harassment Workshop to Vermont Law School

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt.

Titled "Justice=Action for Safe Spaces," the daylong program will include a screening of the documentary "War Zone," a workshop facilitated by Shawna Potter of Hollaback! Baltimore, and an activist panel.

Program activities are co-sponsored by Law Students for Reproductive Justice and the Office of Student Affairs and Diversity with support from numerous VLS student groups.

"Street harassment is a pervasive form of verbal harassment that reinforces a culture of entitlement and acceptance of behavior that threatens and degrades the target of the harassment," said VLS student Breanne Vander Naald '15‎, co-chair of Law Students for Reproductive Justice. "This workshop aims to empower everyone by raising awareness about street harassment and developing strategies for responding to it."

"VLS is a place that values respect, dignity, and racial and gender equity," Vander Naald added. "Safe communities are defined not just by the absence of harassment and intimidation, but also by affirmative demonstrations of support and respect."

Preregistration for "Justice=Action for Safe Spaces" is strongly encouraged but not required. Breakfast and lunch are included, and continuing legal education (CLE) credits are available for the panel portion. For more information about the street harassment workshop, including a schedule and registration, visit eventbrite.com or the event page on Facebook, or email breannevandernaald@vermontlaw.edu.
