Dr. Rudall teaches the VLGS Graduate Program course International Environmental Law and Policy.
Education and Career
Dr. Jason Rudall is Assistant Professor of Public International Law at Leiden University. He completed a PhD in International Law at the Graduate Institute, Geneva in 2018, which he defended summa cum laude. Dr Rudall also holds a Master in International Law from the Graduate Institute and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Hons) from Trinity College Dublin, where he was awarded the Entrance Exhibitioner Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement in 2009.
Dr Rudall has taught a wide variety of subjects including Public International Law, International Environmental Law, International Investment Law, International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Compliance in International Law, as well as Legal Research, Writing and Advocacy. He has taught LLM students, bachelor students, diplomats, international civil servants and judges.
Dr Rudall has published with Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Routledge, as well as in the American Journal of International Law, amongst other leading law journals and edited volumes. His major works are Altruism in International Law (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2020), Compensation for Environmental Damage under International Law (Routledge, 2020) and The UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses: A Commentary (Oxford University Press, 2018) (with L. Boisson de Chazournes, M. Mbengue, M. Tignino and K. Sangbana (eds)).
During his law degree, Dr Rudall served as Editor-in-Chief of Ireland’s largest law journal – the Trinity College Law Review. In an effort to maximise the societal impact of his scholarship, he has collaborated with international organisations and non-governmental organisations. For example, Dr Rudall has worked with UNCTAD and the ILO, participating in their Annual Inter-agency Roundtable on Corporate Social Responsibility at the United Nations in Geneva. He is also involved with informing the discussions of the ad hoc UN Working Group on the Global Compact for the Environment (established by the UN General Assembly (A/72/L.51)). At the Graduate Institute, Dr Rudall built a successful clinic programme, collaborating with UN Environment, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Association for the Prevention of Torture, amongst many other organisations.
For almost 10 years Dr Rudall has worked as a Researcher at the University of Geneva. He has also conducted research in international legal practice at King & Spalding LLP in Geneva, Maples & Calder LLP in Dublin and Furnival Chambers in London, and is involved in assisting arbitral tribunals with investor-state dispute settlement cases. During his PhD studies, Dr Rudall was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge.
At the Graduate Institute, Dr Rudall worked as Programme Manager for the LLM in International Law. He helped to conceive, launch and run this programme for 6 years. He was also appointed Special Advisor to the Academic Dean of the Graduate Institute, providing strategic advice in setting the academic policies and direction of the university.
