  • Patrick Parenteau​'s blog piece, "Sackett Redux?" on Corps of Engineers v Hawkes Constr., a case involving the Clean Water Act the Supreme Court will hear this term, appears in the American College of Environmental Lawyers, on December 17, 2015.

  • Janet Milne participated via Skype in an international workshop on "The Role of the Polluter Pays Principle and Other Legal Principles in Energy Taxes" on December 16, 2015.  The workshop is part of a two-year project funded by the European Commission and organized by the Instituto University de Estuidios Europeos in Madrid, Spain.  Professor Milne is the US participant in the project.

  • Betsy Baker was a panelist at a workshop on “U.S.-Canada Shared Interests and Opportunities in the North American Arctic,” hosted by the Arctic Domain Awareness Center at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.  The panel moderator was Becca Pincus, VLS MELP ’10, who is now the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Maritime Policy at the US Coast Guard Academy, Center for Arctic Studies and Policy, New London, CT. The workshop took place on December 15, 2015.

  • ​Tracy Bach was the U.S. Embassy in Qatar's 2015 Earth Day speaker.  In a program presented at the Embassy's "American Corner" located in Qatar University's main library, Professor Bach spoke on the topic of "What Earth Day Means to Qatar?​​"  In ​addition to her presentation, she served as a judge for an essay competition which received more than two dozen entries about Earth Day in Qatar.  Profe​ssor Bach is a visiting professor at Qatar University College of Law this semester and a research fellow at QU's Center for Energy and Sustainability Law.​

  • Betsy Baker was an invited panelist for a high-level Japan-U.S. Arctic Strategy Workshop. The invitation-only event was designed to advise representatives of the Japanese Presidency and Ministries on formulating Japan’s Arctic Strategy.  Japan is one of the newly elected “Observer” States to the Arctic Council.   • Janet Milne took part in the Energy Independent Vermont Educational Forum at the Montshire Museum in Norwich, Vermont, on March 5, 2015.  The public workshop, organized by a coalition of Vermont organizations, was designed to educate people about the “carbon pollution tax” bill that has been introduced in the Vermont House. Professor Milne’s presentation, Carbon Taxes 101, provided an introduction to carbon taxes and an overview of their use in other countries.

  • Patrick Parenteau is the lead author of "Climate Change in the Marine Environment," in Ocean and Coastal Law Policy, 2nd edition, ABA, February 2015.

  • Jamie Renner presented at the Miami School of Law's Inter-American Law Review Symposium, "Food Safety Modernization Act: The Future of Food Litigation," on February 6, 2015. Professor Renner spoke on the potential impacts of FSMA on small-scale farmers across the world who import food into the U.S.​

  • Betsy Baker presented "Options for an Arctic Regional Seas Arrangement," at the Symposium on Arctic Governance at the University of California, Irvine School of Law on January 30-31, 2015.

  • Janet Milne​ is co-editor of two book manuscripts that were delivered in January to Edward Elgar for publication: Carbon Pricing: Design, Experiences and Issues (L. Kreiser et al. eds., forthcoming 2015) and ​Environmental Pricing: Studies in Policy Choices and Interactions (L. Kreiser et al. eds., forthcoming 2015). The two books contain selected, peer-reviewed papers that were delivered at the15th Global Conference on Environmental Taxation in Copenhagen in September 2014, an event co-sponsored by the VLS Environmental Tax Policy Institute.  The books are Volumes XV and XVI respectively in the CRITICAL ISSUES IN ENVIRONMENTAL TAXATION series.  Prof. Milne has been a co-editor of the series since its inception.

  • Laurie Ristino and VLS second year JD student Joseph Simpson co-authored "All Dried Up: Tensions Rise Over Water Shortage in California." The article was published online in January in EcoPerspectives, a blog hosted by the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law (VJEL).

  • Laurie Ristino ​ presented at the Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum's 25th Anniversary Symposium "Carrots & Sticks: Moving the U.S. National Food System Toward a Sustainable Future" on January 23, 2015. There, Director Ristino spoke on on the role of distribution and the food movement.​

  • Betsy Baker presented "Do We Need an Arctic Ocean Science Coordinating Agreement?" at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage, Alaska on January 19, 2015.

  • William Schulte​ presented "Public Interest Litigation Under the United States Clean Air Act," at the 19th Annual U.S.-China Legal Exchange organized by United States Department of Commerce and China's Ministry of Commerce, Beijing and Wuhan, China on January 13 and 15, 2015.​​

  • Laurie Ristino presented on "Climate Change and Food Security" at the Agriculture and Food Law section's panel during the AALS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, on January 3, 2015.

  • Laura Murphy and Pat Parenteau​ wrote an amicus brief in an important Clean Water Act case pending in the Second Circuit (Catskills Trout Unlimited v EPA). The brief was filed on behalf of a group of environmental law professors and two of the original authors of the CWA—Leon Billings and Tom Jorling.

  • In late December, Edward Elgar Publishing released the paperback edition of the Handbook of Research on Environmental Taxation, previously published in hardback in 2012.  Professor Janet Milne​ is the book’s lead editor. Edward Elgar determined that the book’s record warranted release in a paperback edition that will reach substantially beyond the library market.  The book provides an interdisciplinary, international assessment of the state-of-the-art of research on environmental taxation.
