Biography

Jason Dykstra joins VLGS with a wealth of teaching and practice experience. Most recently, Jason was a lecturer at the University of Idaho College of Law where he formerly directed the Housing Clinic and taught Copyrights, Trademarks, Property II, Torts II, Real Estate Transactions, and Legal Writing and Analysis. Previously, he served as the assistant director of a legal research and writing program for six years. Prior to teaching, Jason practiced law, engaged primarily in the areas of real property, construction, intellectual property rights, business transactions, and estate planning. Jason is also a musician and songwriter who presents on creativity, copyrights and trademarks, and the music business at conferences, music festivals, and podcasts.

His recent scholarship proposes that creativity can thrive in the law school curriculum, and in particular, the legal writing and clinical classroom by teaching creatively, providing divergent learning opportunities, and cultivating an environment conducive to creativity. Jason believes law students need to enter the practice not just prepared to think, write, and speak like a lawyer, but also with a healthy curiosity and a wellspring of creativity.

Jason earned his juris doctor from the University of Montana School of Law, where he was a founding member of the Environmental Law Group and interned with the Disability Law Clinic. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Montana.
