Biography

Genevieve Byrne is a professor of law in the Institute for Energy and the Environment and director of the Energy Clinic, where students turn hands-on legal training into meaningful action for communities, local governments, and clean energy projects. Her work focuses on the intersection of energy, agriculture, land use, and distributed energy resources, with a consistent emphasis on making energy law accessible and grounded in real-world impact. She helped launch and shape the Farm and Energy Initiative, exploring legal and policy questions at the crossroads of agriculture and renewable energy, and previously practiced public interest environmental litigation, representing citizen groups and nonprofits in cases involving nuclear and solar energy permitting.

Professor Byrne regularly collaborates with municipalities, utilities, advocacy organizations, and research partners on projects involving community solar, geothermal development, agrivoltaics, beneficial electrification, and distributed energy compensation. She presents and publishes on these topics nationally and internationally. She is licensed to practice law in Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, and holds a JD from Lewis & Clark Law School (with a certificate in Natural Resources Law) and an LLM in Energy Law from Vermont Law and Graduate School.
