Biography

Kirsten Nakjavani Bookmiller specializes in international disaster law and policy. In addition to a 35-year academic career in international relations, she has served as a subject-matter expert, trainer, and discussion facilitator related to disaster management and humanitarian response for national governments, the United Nations, the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement, and local community practitioners. She co-founded the American Society of International Law’s Disaster Law Interest Group, the International Disaster, Emergency, and Law Network, and is a member of the editorial board of the Yearbook of International Disaster Law.

Dr. Bookmiller holds her Ph.D in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia and a JD with a concentration in Climate Law from Vermont Law and Graduate School. She has also undertaken advanced training through the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and the Hague Academy of International Law. Her current research focuses on the nexus of disaster law and environmental peacebuilding.
