Biography

Dave Jennings is a senior conservation policy analyst in the Center for Conservation Innovation at Defenders of Wildlife, where he researches and analyzes environmental laws and policies that are wildlife-focused, or that have a significant impact on wildlife, to improve their effectiveness in conserving imperiled species and habitats. Toward that end, his main interests are in the Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, among others.

Prior to joining Defenders of Wildlife, Dave practiced law in Colorado, and was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Maryland. Dave’s previous scientific research covered taxa ranging from sharks to carnivorous plants but largely focused on topics at the intersection of community ecology, conservation biology, and global change biology. His work has been published in journals such as Biological Conservation, Conservation Science and Practice, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B – Biological Sciences, and he consulted on the documentaries America the Beautiful, Plants Behaving Badly: Carnivorous Plants, and Swamplands USA. Additionally, Dave is a fellow of the Linnean Society of London, and serves as an appointed member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law and as an associate editor at the journal Frontiers in Conservation Science.

He holds a JD, magna cum laude, from Vermont Law and Graduate School, a PhD in Biology from the University of South Florida, and an MSc in Biodiversity and Conservation and a BSc in Zoology from the University of Surrey Roehampton.
