The New Economy Law Center, co-directed by Professor Melissa Scanlan and Professor Gus Speth, is collaborating with Professor James Salzman of the University of California Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science and Management in sponsoring a workshop on "Law for the New Economy," May 23–24, 2016. The workshop, which will take place at the Bren School, will focus on articulating the legal architecture needed to create a new economy in which ecological integrity, social justice, and vibrant democracy are central. Gus Speth will launch the event with a keynote that provides an urgent call for a new environmentalism. Workshop panelists include Professors Melissa Scanlan, Laurie Ristino, Jennifer Taub, and Kevin Jones from VLS; James Salzman; Shalanda Baker of the University of Hawaii; Mary Wood of the University of Oregon; Jedediah Purdy of Duke University; Catherine Iorns Magallanes of Victoria University of Wellington; and Diana Winters of the University of Indiana; as well as David Bollier, Cofounder, Commons Strategies Group; Janelle Orsi, Cofounder and Director, Sustainable Economies Law Center; and Linda Sheehan, Executive Director, Earth Law Center.​
