Lindi von Mutius '08

Lindi von Mutius spent the summer after her 1L year interning at the ENRLC and working on litigation around the Vermont Yankee discharge permits and Omya's discharge of pollutants into open, unlined pits.  She really enjoyed working with experts, and seeing how the law can be applied to make meaningful differences in communities and ecosystems suffering from industrial pollution. Her summer at the clinic helped shape her approach to environmental advocacy, and the many ways effective advocacy can take shape. "Working on the Vermont Yankee litigation taught me to really think about how you can use science and data to help make persuasive arguments, and how to write these arguments in a compelling way. I will forever credit the ENRLC for helping me to become a much better legal writer! It also taught me how to listen to communities impacted by pollution, and let that listening inform the work, rather than going in and telling people what you need them to do to win your lawsuit. The spirit of 'Lex Pro Urbe Et Orbe' drew me to VLS, and the ENRLC helped me see that principle in action." After law school, Lindi helped found two legal clinics that serve homeless individuals.

Lindi now serves as the Chief of Staff of the Sierra Club, where she brings that same ethic to her work. As Chief of Staff, Lindi works on the day-to-day project management of the senior management team and is an active voice for staff on organizational changes and strategic decisions. She provides insights on the full range of the Club’s work and identifies opportunities to develop and strengthen its reach and effectiveness. Prior to joining the Sierra Club, Lindi worked at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and as the Director of Government and Legal Affairs and director of the Philadelphia Chapter office for the German Ministry of Economics and Energy and the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Previously she also worked at Flaster Greenberg and Fox Rothschild as a corporate, environmental, and bankruptcy litigation associate. Lindi is a native of Essen, Germany, and received her B.A. in Environmental Studies and History from Williams College, an A.L.M. in Environmental Management from Harvard University, and a J.D. from Vermont Law School.
