Marnie Avila Alvarez

Biography

Hailing from Cuba, Marnie Avila Alvarez earned her law degree from the Havana University Faculty of Law in 2014. Since her graduation, she been focused on international commercial law, and foreign investment.

After being part of the International Collaboration Office of the Ministry of International Trade and Foreign Investment, she became a member of the legal team of GECOMEX, the state-own holding of import-export companies, as well as their offices abroad, where she made postgrad studies on international commercial trade and foreign investment in Cuba.

Later on, she was invited to become part of the legal team of Union Electrica (UNE), the Cuban Public Utility, where she was involved in handling part of its import operations as a team member. Inside UNE, Marnie became one of the legal members of the International Business Negotiation Team, until eventually she joined the International Business Office full time. There, she worked renewable energy projects, mostly solar, and other non-renewable project such as the fleet of three powerships for electricity generation in Mariel. During her time at the International Business Office, Marnie became an adjoint teacher at her alma mater, teaching commercial law.

After getting exposed to some energy law project at the UNE, Marnie decided to pursue the field full time and came to the US with her husband, Osvaldo, in the fall of 2021 to begin her LLM in Energy Law at Vermont Law School.
