About This Class

Lawyers and land use professionals, whether representing landowners, developers, regulators, development opponents, or land conservation organizations, need to understand the same basics of land use transactions, development and finance. This land use course, a companion to Land Use Regulation, addresses the private side of land use: how land is surveyed and divided, how its title recorded and insured, how its conveyance is contracted for and executed, and how land is developed. The course examines land and development finance, as well the development process, and the roles of attorney, realtor, developer, lender, equity investor, architect, engineer, planner, regulator, and others involved in the effort to create our built environment. This course provides an understanding of the real estate market, and its recent breakdown leading to the great recession. Method of evaluation: exercises, land contract negotiation, and take-home exam. AWR: Available
