South Royalton Legal Clinic
About This Class
NOTE: Because of the client representation focus of the program, 6 to 9 credits; students may only register for another course in the summer term with the express consent of the Director of the Clinic. All students should realize that occasional conflicts may arise between court hearings (and similar commitments) and daytime classes, in which case-client obligations prevail. Students work under supervising attorneys representing real clients in civil cases in state and federal courts in Vermont and before administrative agencies. Preference will be given to students who have had both Evidence and Trial Practice, or one of these (lesser preference), but neither is required. *Classroom component: to be integrated into the regular work week; classroom schedule to be determined based upon students' schedules. Students work at the clinic's facility, 190 Chelsea Street. The majority of time is spent providing supervised representation to real clients. Classroom component will include group meetings on basic practice topics (e.g. office procedures, Vermont practice) and seminars/tutorials on substantive and related procedural topics (e.g. immigration, family law, public benefits, housing, etc.). Class work dates: May 27 to August 8, 2014, for 9 credits; students earning fewer credits have modified work dates or schedules. Registration: You may register online for the SRLC, but only for the classroom component (2 credits). You are then required to email Sharon Mee, Clinic Office Manager, firstname.lastname@example.org within five days of registering online to indicate your preference for the clinic practicum (work with clients) 4 to 7 credits. The total number of credits possibly available for the clinic and class are 6,7,8, or 9. You must include in the e-mail if you have registered for any classes during the summer. Clinic faculty will then be consulted; and if there are no class conflicts (in reference to class time) enrollment will be approved. An email will then be sent to the Registrar indicating status, with a copy to you.
