Most U.S. prisons are operated by the federal, state and local governments, but since the 1980s a growing number of correctional facilities are being run by private companies contracted by governmental agencies in an effort to reduce costs. Seven percent of the nation's 1.5 million prisoners-the largest inmate population in the world-are held in dozens of privately run prisons across the country, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
