Michael Newdow, a lawyer, physician and minister in the First Atheist Church of True Science, advocated for the seperation of church and state in public institutions. He filed a lawsuit challenging the use of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. He argued the case before the U.S. Supreme Court and lost.
