Australia's Murray-Darling Basin: Buying Back Water for the EnvironmentThe Murray-Darling Basin is Australia's most significant river basin, supporting irrigated agriculture, cities and internationally recognized wetlands. Extended drought in the Murray-Darling Basin has led to numerous policy changes and an increased focus on market-based mechanisms to reallocate water away from irrigated agriculture in order to increase the amount of water delivered to the basin. Chelsea Lane-Miller, a Vermont Law School MELP student and recent Fulbright Scholar, will review Australia's experience attempting to acquire more water for the environment and provide comparisons to U.S. efforts to acquire environmental flows through market-based approaches.
