Environmental Education Group
The Environmental Education Group (EEG) works with third and fifth grade students at nearby Sharon Elementary. Our one-hour classes cover topics ranging from basic scientific concepts to issues of current environmental importance, and culminate in the fifth grade's yearly production of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax during Earth Week here at VLS. EEG provides students with an understanding of the way the environment works and the problems facing it, as well as giving them the tools to address those problems. The knowledge and experiences the students gain from participating in EEG activities fosters within each of them a respect for the environment, a sense of empowerment, and the capability and desire to live more sustainably. Many of the students take the information home with them and teach their families what they have learned, thereby benefiting the entire community. Additionally, EEG gives VLS students an opportunity to work with and give back to their community. EEG classes for the third grade are taught every other week, while the fifth grade EEG class is taught every week. All EEG classes are centered around experiential learning, and include many fun indoor and outdoor activities. If you're interested in finding out more about EEG or joining us the next time we teach, please email Andrea Cone.
