Every student at Vermont Law School taking five or more credits must be covered by a health insurance policy. Vermont Law School offers health insurance coverage through Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Vermont with deductible amounts ranging from $500 to $2,500. The three plans offered differ by deductible amount, varying out-of-pocket maximums, price, etc. Students with fewer than five credits do not qualify for Vermont Law School health insurance coverage.
Vermont Law School will exempt students from purchasing one of the available Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Vermont plans under the following conditions: 1) the student is covered by a parent’s policy, 2) the student is covered by a spouse’s or domestic partner’s policy, or 3) the student has a policy that is comparable to one of the plans offered. In the first two circumstances, the student must complete the waiver request form and submit a letter from the current carrier stating that the student is still covered under the named insurance (dates covered). In the third scenario, the student must complete the waiver request form and submit detailed information about his/her present policy (benefits, coverage, rates, etc. referred to as "plan summary") to Clarke Collins, our benefit specialist. If the present plan is found to be comparable to or better than the appropriate BCBS plan, the student will be granted an approved waiver.
Waiver requests should be submitted well in advance of the start of the coverage period. Waiver requests must be renewed each year (i.e., a new letter is required from current alternative carrier stating that you are still covered under their policy).
A non-compliance fee of $1000.00 will be charged to your tuition account if you do not have Vermont Law School insurance in place or completed, approved waiver documentation on file each year. (This charge may be assessed at any time during the calendar year.) If at any point during the school year you are without insurance coverage, you may be charged the non-compliance fee to your tuition account on a pro-rated basis depending on how long you were without coverage.
Vermont Freedom Plan. We offer two plans that differ in the deductible amount. One of these plans should be considered if you want to be fully covered away from the Vermont Law School area (see list of providers at www.BCBSVT.com).
Vermont Health Partnership. This plan is a network plan and covers lab work 100% if service is provided in the network area. You must choose a primary care physician and you always need prior approval for out of network services. A list of primary care providers can be accessed at www.BCBSVT.com.
