What is Walk-Up Printing?

Walk-Up Printing is environmentally friendly method of printing that allows you to print to a general print queue and then walk up to the printer of your choice in Chase Computer Lab or the Library Computer Lab to release the print job with the swipe of your Student ID Card.

 

How do I get started?

Here are some basic instructions for Windows and Apple computers.

Windows Set-Up

Your computer must be connected to the VermontLaw WiFi network.

  1. In Windows Explorer (File Explorer), enter: \\print1
  2. When prompted for your VLS login, enter it like this:
    • vls\your user name
    • then enter your password
    • tick the box for Remember my credentials
  3. Right+Click VLS_Labs and click Connect
  4. Drivers should download automatically to set up the printer.


 

Color Printing from a Windows Computer

Your computer must be connected to the VermontLaw WiFi network.

  1. In Windows Explorer (File Explorer), enter: \\print1
  2. When Prompted for your VLS Login, enter it like this:
    • vls\your user name
    • then enter your password
    • tick the box for Remember my credentials
  3. Right+Click VLS_Labs_Color and click Connect
  4. Drivers should download automatically to set up the printer.

Note: Color Print Jobs can only be released at the Library Parking Lot Printer

Apple Set-Up

Your computer must be connected to the VermontLaw WiFi network.

  1. Open System Preferences then click Printers & Scanners
  2. Click the + and then click Add Printer or Scanner...
  3. Click Advanced button
    • If you do not see the Advanced button follow these instructions to add it
      • Control+Click empty space of tool bar
      • Click Customize Toolbar…
      • Drag Advanced button to Toolbar
      • Click Done
  4. Click drop down for Type then select: Windows printer via spoolss
  5. Leave Device field set to: Another Device
  6. In URL field enter: smb://print1/VLS_Labs
  7. In Name field enter: VLS Labs
  8. Location can be left blank
  9. Click drop down for Use field and select: Generic PCL Printer then click Add
  10. Tick box for Duplexer then click OK
  11. Close System Preference

Note for Apple Users:

  1. Send a test print to the VLS_Labs queue
  2. If prompted for your VLS login, enter it like this:
    • vls\your user name
    • then enter your password
  3. Tick the box for Remember this password in my keychain
  4. Then click OK

Color Printing from an Apple Computer

Your computer must be connected to the VermontLaw WiFi network.

  1. Open System Preferences then click Printers & Scanners
  2. Click the + and then click Add Printer or Scanner...
  3. Click Advanced button

How do I release my print job?

  1. Walk-Up to the printer of your choice in either Chase Computer Lab or The Library Computer Lab
  2. Tap the Print Release icon on the printer display
  3. Swipe your ID Card over the black card reader
    • You will hear a beep
  4. The display will show your queued print jobs. Just tap the print job you wish to release and then tap Print.

After you have completed printing your jobs, swipe your ID Card over the black card reader to log out.


 

Walk-Up Printing FAQ

1. What if I don't have my ID card to release my print job?

Use the Alternate Logon button to enter your ID number. This will allow access to your account.

2. What if I don't know my ID number?

To access print jobs using Walk-Up Printing you either need your ID card or you need to know your ID number. You will need to look up your ID number in Campus Web.

3. How long will my print job remain in the print queue?

Your print job will remain in the VLS_Labs print queue for 12 hours. After 12 hours have elapsed the print job will be deleted. At this point, you will need to re-print this job.

You will receive a notification 5 minutes before your print job expires:

ATTENTION

Your document "document_name" is held for printing and is due to time out if not collected in 5 minutes.

Then you will receive a notification that the job has been deleted and would need to be re-printed if needed:

ATTENTION

Your document "document_name", held for printing, was not collected and has timed out.

If you wish to print this document you will need to re-submit it.

4. What if I forget to log off after my print job completes?

The system will automatically log you off after 1 minute has elapsed. Please make sure to swipe your ID card over the black card reader to log off when your print job has completed.

5. What if the printer jams while my job is printing?

In this situation, you may have to re-print the job.

6. Is there a print quota or any costs associated with printing?

No - there is no print quota and there are no costs to the Student for any printing.

7. Can I print in Color?

Yes - Print jobs sent to the VLS_Labs_Color print queue can only be released at the Library Parking Lot Printer.
