General Admissions Information

Student-to-Faculty Ratio

Pam Stephens with Student
Vermont Law School prides itself on its low thirteen-to-one student-faculty ratio. According to the American Bar Association (ABA), this ratio put us among the top law schools in the country. In addition, according to the most recent ABA survey of law school curriculum, VLS is one of eleven law schools to offer some first-year doctrinal classes with 35 or fewer students.
For the Juris Doctor program, admissions is fall semester, full-time day study only. The Master of Studies in Environmental Law and Master of Laws in Environmental Law programs have part-time study options. For more information on these programs, see M.S.E.L. Admissions or LL.M. Admissions.

Application materials to be sent to this office are a current application, $60 application fee, resume, personal essays and two letters of recommendation. For J.D. and joint-degree candidates, Vermont Law School will request an LSDAS report from Law Services when the application is received. M.S.E.L. candidates should have their GRE scores sent to Vermont Law School. LL.M. candidates do not need to submit GRE or LSAT scores.

Vermont Law School seeks applicants who will thrive and succeed in a setting of individual respect and public responsibility. We seek students from large cities and small towns, from every state in the Union as well as from countries throughout the globe. The Admissions Committee looks for evidence of sound writing skills, analytical ability, motivation, intellectual curiosity, work experience, and demonstrated commitment to community service. No preference is given to particular undergraduate majors, although academic programs that train students to analyze critically and think creatively are favored. In all cases, students are admitted without consideration of their financial need.

Financial Aid at VLS, with the exception of some merit awards, is based on financial need. Currently, more than 90% of VLS students receive some form of financial assistance including grants, scholarships, federal and private loans, fellowships and federal work-study.
