Part-time JD Externships

A part-time JD Externship is an option for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-semester students. Students must work three hours per week for 15 weeks for each credit earned. For example, a six credit externship requires 2.4 days or 18 hours of work per week. Students may earn from two to six credits depending on the time committed. Students take classes on-campus during the semester in addition to participating in a JD Externship.

The student establishes an externship after consulting with Jeffry White, the coordinator of JD Externships. There is no enrollment limit to part-time externships per se, but there are a limited number of faculty members (faculty sponsors) available to supervise the externship in any given semester.

This program gives students an opportunity to participate in a range of lawyering tasks so that they develop an improved understanding of the legal process and of legal problems at all stages of resolution. Students perform work within a structured workload, which includes responsibility for routine or major court litigation, or for certain well-defined topic areas. To the extent permitted by law, students may also engage in supervised representation of clients before courts or other forums along with the accompanying research, writing, and other lawyering responsibilities.

Students meet regularly with their faculty sponsors for reflection and evaluation of their experience. By participating in this program, students are given the opportunity to develop new understanding of an area of substantive law which they may otherwise be unable to pursue in a classroom environment.
