Dean Shields Honored with State House Resolution

The Vermont General Assembly recently honored retiring Vermont Law School President and Dean Jeff Shields and his wife Genie with a resolution recognizing their dedication to VLS and Vermont over the last eight years.

According to the resolution, which was introduced by Rep. Sarah Buxton '10:

"Whereas, Dean Shields' leadership ushered in a stronger, more globally inclusive environmental network of clinics, institutes, and courses and also established path-breaking partnerships with universities in China, and

"Whereas, his wife, Genie, created a support program (VLS Partners Group) for the men and women who dared to accompany their partners through law school, and the Shields hosted more than 600 events for various groups at their home, and

"Whereas, significant new academic programs begun during Dean Jeff Shields' years on the VLS campus have included the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic, the U.S.-China Partnership for Environmental Law, the Institute for Energy and the Environment, and the Agricultural Law Center, and

"Whereas, major building projects during his tenure included the rehabilitation and expansion of the old South Royalton School, known as the Debevoise building, creation of a new Center for Legal Services, breaking ground for a new fitness center, and the opening of an outdoor classroom, now therefore be it

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly honors retiring Vermont Law School President Geoffrey B. Shields and his wife, Genie, for a remarkable period of educational growth, international outreach, physical improvements on campus, and the building of a stronger sense of school community..."

Prof. McCann Receives Prize From Society for Personality and Social Psychology

Vermont Law School Professor Michael McCann and Harvard Law School Professor Jon Hanson have been selected as the co-winners of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology's 2011 Media Prize in recognition of their outstanding work in promoting personality and social psychology research to the general public via The Situationist blog. McCann and Hanson co-founded the blog.

The Situationist is a forum for scholars, students, lawyers, policymakers and interested citizens to examine, discuss and debate the effect of situational forces -- that is, non-salient factors around and within us -- on law, policy, politics, policy theory and our social, political and economic institutions. The Situationist is associated with The Project on Law and Mind Sciences at Harvard Law School.

The Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) is an international organization of scholars and the largest professional society in the world devoted to social and personality psychology. The SPSP also includes representation of Division 8 (Social and Personality Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. The members of SPSP conduct much of the research drawn upon, promoted and publicized by The Situationist blog.

Professor Cheryl Hanna received the Vermont Women in Higher Education's 2010 Sister Elizabeth Candon Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented to a woman who has shown evidence of promoting and working toward the advancement of women in higher education and involvement at the national, regional, state and local levels in related activities. Based on the nominations of Hanna's VLS colleagues, VLS Dean Jeff Shields and former Southern Vermont College President Barbara Sirvis, the VWHE committee selected Hanna for the award because of her combination of women's related activities, public service, media commentary and professional service. Tuholske Receives Rydberg Award

Professor Jack Tuholske, a visiting faculty member, received the 2010 Kerry Rydberg Award for Environmental Activism at the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference at the University of Oregon School of Law in February. The award is presented annually to a grassroots environmental lawyer in recognition of their achievements in public interest law. Tuholske, a private practitioner in Missoula, Mont., has litigated a wide range of natural resource issues throughout the West.

The prize includes release time from one course for two successive years and an annual award of $5,000 for two years. Prof. Dworkin Nominated to EPRI Executive Committee

Professor Michael Dworkin has been nominated by the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Governance and Nominating Committee to one of the six seats on the Executive Committee of EPRI's Board of Trustees. This will become effective and public at the EPRI Annual seminar and Board meeting in Palo Alto on August 4-6, 2009.

EPRI is a $300-$325mm/year non-profit research center jointly funded by the utilities of the US, with moderate input from Japan, Canada, France, South Africa, etc. Its bylaws call for the 33 member Board to have 18 investor-owned-utility members, 9 co-op or muni "public-power" members, and 6 non-utility 'outside' directors.

Former Vermont Public Service Board Chairman Michael Dworkin has won a national award recognizing his work in founding the Vermont Law School's Institute for Energy and the Environment.

The Mary Kilmarx Award is given annually by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners' Energy Resources and the Environment (ERE) Committee to someone whose work reflects the Committee's goals of promoting good government, clean energy and the environment.
