International Semester Study Abroad Exchange Programs
Vermont Law School’s International and Comparative Law Program offers semester study-abroad options for JD students at the following leading law schools:
McGill University Faculty of Law in Québec, Canada
Faculty advisor: Professor Pamela Stephens
McGill University’s Faculty of Law has a world-renowned international and comparative law curriculum. Its location in Montréal, Québec, Canada makes it an ideal place to develop an understanding of both common law and civil law legal systems. The city of Montréal is located approximately three hours by car north of Vermont Law School.
Renmin University of China School of Law
Faculty Advisor: Professor Jason Czarnezki
Renmin University of China School of Law, located in Beijing, is considered China’s premier law school, both nationally and internationally. Vermont Law School’s semester exchange with Renmin builds upon other student opportunities in our U.S.-China Partnership for Environment Law. Students in this semester exchange will have the rare opportunity to be exposed to the Chinese legal system and Chinese legal education, taking courses in Chinese jurisprudence and Chinese environmental law. University of Trento Faculty of Law in Trento, Italy

The University of Trento is one of Europe’s leading schools for the study of European Union law and comparative law. Located in northern Italy, it is surrounded by the scenic Dolomite Mountains. Trento offers law courses taught in English, Italian and German. Courses recently taught in English include Comparative Constitutional Justice, Economic Analysis of Legal Institutions, African Law, Introduction to Italian Law, and Protection of Fundamental Rights in Europe.
Université de Cergy-Pontoise Faculty of Law outside of Paris, France
Faculty advisor: Professor Stephanie Farrior
A leading French law school located on the outskirts of Paris and the top-ranked school in France for business law, the University of Cergy-Pontoise offers Vermont Law students the option of enrolling in just the first semester of its LLM program in French and European Union Law. Courses in this program are taught in English by Cergy professors and by practicing lawyers from Paris law firms, thereby offering students both exposure to French legal education and contacts among legal practitioners in Paris. The school’s location on the edge of Paris gives students access to historical and cultural centers that can help add perspective to their law studies.
Eligibility and Admission
Participating JD students must be in the top half of their class from the time of application through their departure for the semester abroad.
We urge all interested students to attend one of the Information Sessions we hold on our education abroad opportunities in the Fall and Spring semesters. The application period takes place in early March. Application forms are available from the International Programs office.
Other
Students must pay for their travel, lodging, and other expenses associated with living abroad. Students arrange for their own housing and transportation.
