Student studying outside.

Focused Studies

As you pursue the JD curriculum at VLS, you will find many ways to focus your studies or concentrate in a particular area, in both formal and informal arrangements. For example, exchange programs with other institutions can take you to study at another campus within the U.S. or abroad. Or you can create a thoughtful, interdisciplinary course of study.

Whatever your aims, you will find generous support from advisors, faculty, and staff for a wide range of interests within the law and related areas.

Sports Law Institute

The Sports Law Institute (SLI) at Vermont Law School serves as an educational, research, and professional vehicle for exploring connections between law and sports. The SLI engages in original research, promotes experiential learning and employment opportunities for VLS students and alumni, and connects the VLS community with academic and professional sports law activities.

Exchange Programs

Vermont Law School has established student exchange programs with the University of Connecticut School of Law, Franklin Pierce Law Center, Hastings College of the Law (University of California), Howard University School of Law, and New York Law School. Through the exchange programs, a limited number of second- and third-year students may spend a semester at one of these law schools to take advantage of curricular offerings unavailable at Vermont Law School.

Interdisciplinary Programs

Interdisciplinary education is central to developing thoughtful, critical, and creative lawyers who serve clients and the larger community well. Lawyers often work at the cusp of law and other fields and solve problems with other professionals. For example, environmental lawyers frequently work with environmental engineers, scientists, and health professionals. The interdisciplinary curriculum prepares graduates to work with nonlegal professionals, as modern legal practice increasingly demands, and helps them to think flexibly about varied career opportunities.
