Degree Programs

A conversation with Professor Gus Speth.

Climate change, wildlife protection, and alternative energy are just a few of the critical issues facing the world today. Vermont Law School and its top-ranked environmental law and policy degree programs are leading the movement to address these challenges.

Master of Environmental Law and Policy

Not just for lawyers, the MELP program gives students a comprehensive knowledge of the policies and laws shaping the solutions to these problems. VLS’s world-renowned faculty teach an innovative curriculum comprised of traditional law offerings and MELP-specific courses in writing and advocacy designed to benefit graduates in the public and private sectors. Experiential learning opportunities with state and federal agencies, advocacy groups, and international organizations ensure that MELP graduates are prepared for real-world situations the first day on the job. Working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Land Trust Alliance, and the Sierra Club, MELP graduates have made an impact on today’s issues in local, national, and international arenas, and will continue to do so as concern for the environment grows.

Flexible options allow candidates to complete the program in as little as 12 months or up to five years. Summers-only study is also an option, as are multiple joint-degree and dual-degree programs offered though VLS and leading national and international schools.
