Clinics and Experiential Programs

Semester in Practice

A full-time, limited enrollment, individually tailored, external clinic, appropriate for students interested in self-directed learning under the supervision of an experienced field-mentor. Field-mentors are experienced lawyers who work with and within the government (state, federal and local), NGOs, non-profit organizations, corporations, and law firms. VLS takes an active role in the selection of mentors and provides support and training for mentor/supervisors.

Student/mentor matches take into consideration individual student interests, skills, and learning goals. The SiP is divided into two components: practicum and reflective class. The 11-credit practicum is pass/fail. The 2-credit reflective class, required simultaneously with the practicum, is graded.

Because resources for "distant" (beyond the Montreal/DC corridor) SiPs are limited, students who want a "distant" SiP must complete the initial Request to Enroll process before March 15. Students who do not want a distant SiP must enroll by April 1 for the fall semester, and by September 30 for the spring semester. For more information, see the Academic Regulations and the FAQ informational brochure, available at various sites on campus including Rogers House, the Office of Career Services, and in the VLS community.
