Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic

Enforcing Stormwater Requirements to Protect the Mystic River in Boston

In conjunction with the Conservation Law Foundation and the La Communidad community group, the Clinic has helped develop and initiate a series of lawsuits designed to prompt industrial scrap metal recycling facilities along the Mystic River in Everett, Massachusetts to come into compliance with stormwater permitting requirements. The stormwater runoff from these facilities is typically contaminated with high levels of toxic metals and other contaminants, and noncompliance with federal permitting requirements is rampant in the industry. These ongoing sources of contamination have impeded efforts to clean up the Mystic River and restore it to its former glory. The Clinic has brought three lawsuits on behalf of CLF involving four industrial sites.
